      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_">The Matthew Fredrick and Claire Wilcox Noall photograph collection contains portraits of Matthew and Claire Noall with friends and photographs of  historic sites related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The collection also contains photographs of sites in Southern Utah, Colorado, Alta, and Salt Lake City.</abstract>

      <p>Matthew and Claire Noall were a Utah couple who contributed to the educational, literary, religious, and civic life of their city and state. They acquired and preserved a significant collection of manuscripts and on December 27, 1972 willed it to the Special Collections of the University of Utah. </p>
      <p>Claire Augusta Wilcox Noall (1892-1971) studied journalism at Ensign College (LDS College) and the English Department of the University of Utah. She contributed numerous articles of history, tales of adventure, descriptions of picturesque places she had visited, and poems to periodicals. She belonged to the Utah Academy of the Arts, Letters and Sciences, Utah Historical Society, Utah Folklore Society, Cleofan Literary Club, Ensign Dinner Club, League of Utah Writers and was Branch and State President of the National League of American Pen Women of which she was a charter member of Salt Lake City Branch. She traveled extensively, taking two trips to Europe where she researched for her writing. </p>
      <p>Matthew Frederick Noall (1890-1977) graduated with an A. B. Degree from the University of Utah and University of California, earning an M. A. Degree and a Doctorate of Education. He taught and was principal in elementary and secondary schools, supervisor of secondary education and acting Superintendent of Salt Lake City Schools, teacher and administrator of LDS College, and was listed in Who's Who in Educational Central Research Committee, and was appointed was a local sponsor for the leaders and Specialist Program House Rotary Club and a member of the Ensign Club. In 1972, he received the Merit Honor Award from the University of Utah Emeritus Club. He was a member of the Sons of the Pioneers.</p>

      <p>Claire Noall was a photographer and writer of the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the author of a biography of Church leader Willard Richards. A major portion of the Noall's photograph collection consists of pictures of the Richards family and their home in England. In addition to the Richards material, there are numerous photographs of southern Utah scenery, Alta, Utah as both mining town and ski resort, historic sites, Salt Lake City scenes, and a nineteenth century album of a mission to Hawaii. The collection contains copy prints and copy negatives of correspondence and historic images.</p>
