      <p>In 1904, Robert L. "Bob" Picken came to the Okanogan region from Iowa.
		  He established a cattle ranch and during his long career served Washington
		  State and the cattle industry in various capacities, including representative
		  of the Okanogan County Livestock Association, the Washington Cattlemen's
		  Association, Washington State Senator, and Washington representative to the
		  United States Senate hearings on Public Land Policy, 1947. Picken frequently
		  drew on his long experience as a cattleman to give talks on methods of range
		  management.</p>

      <p>Robert Picken's papers consist of a variety of documents dealing
		  primarily with the cattle business and the related topic of range management in
		  the Okanogan area. The papers deal with Picken's activities in the Washington
		  State Cattlemen's Association and as Washington representative to United States
		  hearings on public land policy. Other papers deal with grazing regulations, the
		  office of price stabilization retailing beef, and creating a Washington
		  Department of National Resources. </p>
