Cecil Matthew Sly (1897-1984), of Stevenson, WA, attended the State College of Washington
from 1915 to 1919, graduating in Agriculture. He started his educational career by
taking a job as a science teacher and coach at the high school in Port Angeles, WA,
working his way from teacher to principal at various schools. He served as
superintendent in Anchorage, AK; Tualatin and Weston, OR; and in 1945 became the
Superintendent of Schools for Crook County, OR. He retired in July, 1963, remaining
active in community organizations. Cecil Sly Elementary School in Prineville, OR is
named after him.

117 photographs from a dismantled scrapbook, most covering student life at the State
College of Washington (WSC) circa 1912-1916. Many pages are whole; many consist of
single images obviously cut out of the album, and there are a few loose commercial
postcards as well. Included are photographs of sporting events, ROTC, Camp
Cunningham, and band and orchestra events. About half lack any labeling or dating.

Many of the photographs slightly predate Cecil Sly’s arrival at WSC; these appear to
be taken or collected by Cecil’s brother, Jay A. Sly (1893-1973), who graduated from
