Mendell Holmes was born 1849 Febuary 23, in Kingston (or Plymouth), Massachusetts, and
attended the West Newton English and Classical School in West Newton, Massachusetts.
After graduation, Mendell returned to Kingston for a few years before moving to San
Francisco, California in 1872, and worked as a salesman with the Thomas Day
Electrical Company in San Francisco. There, he reportedly married a woman named Zoe.
By the 1880s he was apparently single again and working on ocean-going ships. He
came to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1886 as crew on the schooner Penelope,
and then engaged in sealing there for several years, also sailing as mate on the
schooner Casco in 1891. In about 1912, Holmes retired to Sooke, British Columbia,
where he passed away on 1922 January 10.
