      <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
    
         <p>Dr. Arthur L. Cohen (1916-1999), was a Professor in the Department of Botany and Biological Sciences at Washington State University from 1962 to 1999, and served as the founding Director of the Electron Microscope Center at WSU from 1962 to 1979. Dr. Cohen received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Stanford University in 1937, his Master of Science in Botany from Harvard University in 1939, and his Ph.D. in Botany from Harvard University in 1940. He served as a Guggenheim Fellow at the Technical University in Delft, Holland. While a professor at WSU, Dr. Cohen served as a Visiting Professor of Research in Cytochemistry at Yale University and Yale Medical School, and was also Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Sri Lanka. He authored over fifty scientific publications and pioneered preparation techniques for scanning electron microscopy and critical point drying.</p>

         <p>MS.2008.32: this accession includes research notes and publications on plant DNA and coding, growth hormones in wheat, cryobiology, protoplasmic streaming, radiomimetic effects, photosynthetic bacteria, autotrophic bacteria, mathematical relationships in electron optics, scanning electron microscopy, permeability of osmotic effects, and critical point drying.It also contains professional incoming and outgoing correspondence from 1986 to 1990, Cohen's curriculum vitae from 1970, copies of his grant proposals and applications, and lecture materials.</p>
         <p>MS.2015.18: This accession includes: correspondence; presentations and publications by Cohen; grant files; papers related to an unpublished book on scanning electron microscopy; files reflecting Cohen's work on critical point drying; files related to his work as director of the Electron Microscopy Center at Washington State University; audiovisual media; and journal articles collected by Cohen, classified and filed by subject.</p>
