The Haskell C. and Sarah E. Carter Memoir was written by Haskell C. Carter and documents his upbringing, college experience, marriage to Sarah Eidal, career, travels, and family. Haskell Carter graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1923 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. Biographical Note:

Haskell C. Carter attended Oregon Agricultural College (OAC) after serving in World War I and graduated in 1923 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. By 1928, he was the production manager for the Iron Fireman Company in Portland, Oregon; he worked for Iron Fireman through World War II and in 1948 was promoted to Vice-President in charge of manufacturing with responsibility for production at plants in Portland, Cleveland, and Toronto. In 1952, Carter partnered with Joe Fisher, a Portland automobile dealer, to create the Joe Fisher - Carter Company, which manufactured garbage trucks.

Haskell Clarence Carter was born January 15, 1898 in Tennessee and moved with his family to Hillsboro, Oregon sometime prior to 1920. Carter was a member of the Delta Kappa fraternity at Oregon Agricultural College as well as the Masonic Club and engineering student organizations. In the early 1940s, he was a member of the Oregon State Dads Club; Carter had two sons who attended Oregon State College.

Carter married Sarah Elizabeth ("Sally") Eidal on December 27, 1922 in Ellensburg, Washington, where she was a teacher at the time. Sarah was born January 22, 1900 and graduated from the State Normal School in Ellensburg in 1919.

Sarah E. Carter died on October 19, 1987 and Haskell C. Carter died on March 25, 1989. They were living in the Portland area at the time of their deaths.

This memoir was transferred to the Special Collections and Archives Research Center by the University Honors College in 2015.

This volume was donated to the Oregon State University Honors College by David Carter, a descendant of Haskell C. Carter.

The Special Collections and Archives Research Center's holdings include numerous collections that document the experience of Oregon State students.  Of special note pertaining to engineering students are the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Oregon State Oregon State College Student Branch Records (MSS ASME) and the Samuel H. Graf Collection (MSS Graf).  Materials documenting engineering instruction and research at Oregon State are available in the College of Engineering Records (RG 062) and the Engineering Experiment Station Records (RG 100). Other collections that include memoirs include the W.J. Gilstrap Papers (MSS Gilstrap), the Frank H. Bartholomew Collection (MSS Bartholomew), and the Campus Club Alumni Collection (MSS CampusClub).

The Haskell C. and Sarah E. Carter Memoir consists of a memoir written and published by Oregon State University alumnus Haskell C. Carter detailing stories from his life, including his childhood growing up in Hillsboro, Oregon; marriage to Sarah "Sally" Eidal and their family; working for the Ford Motor Company in Detroit; his manufacturing businesses in Portland; various residences in the Portland area; and trips to Europe in later years.

In Chapter 6, Carter describes his student years at Oregon Agricultural College from 1919 to 1923. He provides accounts of his courses and professors, including engineering professor Samuel Graf. Haskell also writes about his fellow fraternity brothers, his rebuilt car "Vamp," returning World War I veterans attending college, summer school, and his courtship of Sarah Eidal.

Several of Carter's family members also attended Oregon State and are profiled in the memoir. These include his brother Conway, son Russell, and granddaughter Marilyn.
