<head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains photographs relating to mining in the East Rand Proprietary Mines on the Witwatersrand Basin at Boksburg, to the east of Johannesburg, South Africa, with an accompanying letter about the photographs and mine operations from mining engineer L.T. Seymour to Thomas Mien, general manager of the East Rand Proprietary Mines (1899). There are also two letters (August 1915) regarding American Trona Corporation’s work to establish a successful paint to coat pipes for a brine pipeline to bring soda ash from Searles Lake to its potash processing plant in Trona, California, the company-owned town established by the American Trona Corporation in 1913. The collection also contains three issues of <emph>Las Calaveras</emph>, a quarterly bulletin of the Calaveras County Historical Society (Jan., April, and July 1968) with articles about gold mines in the area and about pioneer Calaveras families. There are also two maps, one of State Highway 49 in California (“The Mother Lode Highway”) and the other of Calaveras County.</p>
