Litton Industries was founded in 1953 by Charles Thornton as a small electronics company. Over the course of the next decade and a half, Litton’s manufacturing interests in San Francisco, California grew substantially when Thornton made a good bet on the Defense Department’s increasing need for sophisticated weapons and on the U. S. Air Force’s need for aircraft. It became the fastest growing company on the stock market by the early 1960s. However, Litton experienced a sharp descent in sales over the next two decades between the 1970s and 1994 as the company quickly decreased in size from its post-WWII high.
