The Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority (PDA) is
a not-for-profit, public corporation chartered by the City of Seattle in 1973
to manage properties in the nine-acre Market Historic District. The Pike Place
Market PDA is responsible for preserving, rehabilitating and protecting the
Market's buildings; increasing farm and food retail opportunities in the
Market; supporting small and marginal businesses; and providing services for
low-income people. PDA activities are governed by a 12-member Council. Of the
12 members, four are appointed by the Mayor, four are elected by the Pike Place
Market Constituency, and four are appointed by the PDA Council. All Council
members must be confirmed by the Seattle City Council and typically serve a
four year term. The Executive Director of the PDA is appointed by the PDA
Council to carry out its policies and direct the staff of the PDA.
