Seattle Fine Arts Society, 1910-1929; and the Art Institute of Seattle,
1929-1933. The Seattle Fine Arts Society did not build a build a permanent
collection, but presented many exhibitions of works loaned by individuals and
institutions. Of the Society's exhibits, the most significant was the Northwest
Annual, a sixty-year tradition which began in 1914 and which first introduced
to the public some of the most important artists of the region. The name of the
Society was changed in 1928, to "Art Institute of Seattle" in order to
emphasize its role as a civic institution. An art museum for the city of
Seattle, designed by architect Carl Gould, was built in 1933 in Volunteer Park.
