In 1906 Albert Fisher and Clarence Rushing of Augusta, Montana, began
to pursue land in Manitoba, Canada, through the purchase of land scrip issued
to Métis, individuals of mixed indigenous and Euro-American ancestry, as the result of
decisions made after the admission of Manitoba into the Confederation in 1870.
Both the relatively early admission of Manitoba and attention to the Métis
aboriginal land rights are credited to the efforts of Métis leader Louis Riel's
leadership in a rebellion in 1868-1870.

Savier Amelin, Louis Wolfe, James Harkinson, and Veronique Swain, the
Métis parties in the land deals with Fisher and Rushing, were former residents
of Manitoba with birth dates that fell between the prescribed dates for
receiving land scrip. The documents give no certain indication of the final
outcome of the land speculation.
