Biographical Note
A Cache County, Utah, native, Ralph Maughan was born in Hyrum in 1922. He attended South Cache High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track. He graduated from USU in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree and in 1948 with a master’s.
Prior to his graduation from college, Maughan served during WW II in the U.S. Army, where he distinguished himself on the battlefield (three battle stars, the Purple Heart and Bronze Star), as well as on the athletic field, where he played football and softball. During a furlough, he married Byrnece Hansen, whom he had met while “dragging” Main Street in Logan before his enlistment.
Byrnece and Ralph were a perfect combination. While Ralph coached and mentored young athletes, Byrnece became their surrogate mother, feeding and supporting the young men during their college years. Byrnece also served as president of the Faculty Women’s League and a member of the Scholarship committee. She is credited with opening the first Career Center in Utah at the Mount Logan Middle School.
After Ralph’s graduation from USU the family relocated to Rexburg, Idaho, where Ralph became head coach for football, basketball and track at Ricks College. In 1951, the couple returned to USU where Ralph took positions as an assistant coach in the same three sports, becoming head track coach in 1954, a position he held until retirement in 1988. In total, Maughan coached at USU for 37 years, longer than anyone either before or after. He was the recipient of the Jack Dempsey Award while in college for the best all-around athlete in the state of Utah. Maughan was also inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 1983 and named Pacific Coast Athletic Association Conference track coach of the year in 1984.
Ralph passed away July 3, 2006. Byrnece passed away October 7, 2015.
This collection consists of information on teams coached by Maughan; publications and instruction manuals; photographs; scrapbooks; and awards and honors received by Coach Maughan.
