Walter E. Peoples was born in Morristown, Tennessee on November 12, 1885. He filed on a
homestead claim five miles east of Cut Bank, Glacier County, Montana on April 4, 1909, and
later became a hardware store owner in the town of Cut Bank. Peoples served on the town's
council for many years and also as a member of the fire department. Peoples married Martha
Macy Gungoll on June 1, 1920. She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on April 5, 1889 and
had been a teacher in the local schools. She later became active in the Cut Bank Women's
Club which helped establish the Glacier County Public Library. In 1946 Martha became
president of the Montana Federation of Women's Clubs. In the early 1960s, Martha and Walter
began collecting biographical information on early pioneers of the Cut Bank area which they
transcribed into an illustrated scrapbook that was presented to the Glacier County Public
Library. Walter Peoples died on February 13, 1973 and Martha died on July 16, 1984.
