      <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
    
         <p>Luther D. Mahone (1878-1966) was born in Hamlin, West Virginia and attended schools in West Virginia and Ohio, obtained some theological training at the West Virginia Conference Seminary, and a law degree from Volent College, Pennsylvania. He served as a captain in the Spanish-American War. </p>
         <p>After the war Mahone began his career as a Methodist-Episcopal minister. He settled in Oregon, serving as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Astoria from 1904-1905. He later established a law practice in Portland, where he became involved with the League of Western Writers as their legal advisor. </p>
         <p>While in Oregon he married Adelle Wentworth. Mahone served as secretary of the Anti-Saloon League in 1903, and was active in the Oregon Progressive Republican League and the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Society. He also served as president of the League of Western Writers, secretary of the Security Benefit Association, and field secretary of the Spanish War Veterans. Mahone died in 1966.</p>

         <p>The collection contains diaries, essays, sermons, manuscripts, and civic and business related organizations. </p>
         <p>The collection is organized topically into three series, Politics, Religion and Other Organizations. </p>
         <p>Politics includes two diaries, essays, Progressive League and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Society documents. </p>
         <p>Religion contains a diary, First Congregational Church of Astoria records and publications, sermons and sermon reviews. </p>
         <p>Other Organizations includes correspondence, poems, short stories, and notes, publications of the League of Western Writers, minutes of the Security Benefit association, and correspondence with the United Spanish War Veterans (society). </p>
