The Great Northern Railway founded Gilman, Montana, about one mile from August, Montana, to be a center for homesteaders who had moved to central Montana to farm around 1910. The Gilman, Montana, Presbyterian Church built a one-story shingle-roof frame church in 1913 at a cost of approximately $500. Gilman reached its peak in a few years with a population of about 1400. By the early 1920s, the town ceased to exist as its occupants moved away, taking most of the buildings to Augusta.
The collection contains materials relative to the construction and furnishing of a small church, including records of fund-raising, a letter from McAfee Manufacturing Co. regarding furnishings, a letter that accompanied Sunday School materials sent from Great Falls, the deed for the property, and a certificate of insurance from the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company of San Francisco, California.
