The Great Northern Railway founded Gilman, Montana, about one mile
from August, Montana, to be a center for homesteaders who had moved to central
Montana to farm around 1910. The Gilman, Montana, Presbyterian Church built a
one-story shingle-roof frame church in 1913 at a cost of approximately $500.
Gilman reached its peak in a few years with a population of about 1400. By the
early 1920s, the town ceased to exist as its occupants moved away, taking most
of the buildings to Augusta.
