Historical Background
In 1917, the Puget Mill Company developed a planned community called Alderwood Manor, located halfway between Seattle and Everett as an attempt to reduce their tax obligation for their logged lands. As part of the promotion for Alderwood Manor, a demonstration farm was created to illustrate the community lifestyle. In this 30-acre site, potential residents learned how to raise chicken, farm fish, and grow fruits and vegetables. Soon after it opened, Alderwood Manor became one of the largest egg producers in the country.
With the completion of the nearby Highway 99 in 1927, the community grew much larger. It suffered greatly during the depression when the price of eggs fell. Many residents were forced to sell their land and the demonstration farm was closed. In addition, the crucial InterUrban Railway ceased to operate in 1939.
In the 1960s, after Interstate 5 was constructed, Alderwood Manor was incorporated as a city. This effort failed, however, and Alderwood Manor Town became part of the city of Lynnwood. Today, the city is home to over 33,000 residents.
