Julius Walter, a pianist and accordionist, was born in Alameda, California, in 1903 and studied the piano with August Stradal. He came to Portland in 1925 as the director of the music group Rose City Trio, which had performed aboard the steamer Rose City. He settled in Portland and become one of the first paid musicians to perform on radio broadcasts. He played on the "Hoot Owls" program for KGW, and in 1937, he joined the staff orchestra of KOIN, where he remained until his retirement in 1969.
