The Oregon Burlesque Performers and Producers Oral History Collection consists of video-recorded interviews with members of the burlesque community in the cities of Portland, Eugene, Bend and Ashland. All of the interviews are born digital and were conducted by Laurie Kurutz, a Professor of Costume Technology at Southern Oregon University.<lb/><lb/>	In tracing their involvement with burlesque performance and production, the collection's narrators comment on a number of themes including the definition of burlesque as an art form, its perceived connection with club stripping and sex work, its importance in shaping personal and community identity, its evolution as a commercial enterprise in the Pacific Northwest, and the role that it continues to play as a medium for social and political commentary.<lb/><lb/>	The entirety of this collection has been transcribed and contextualized and is available online through the <extref show="new" actuate="onrequest" href="https://scarc.library.oregonstate.edu/omeka/exhibits/show/burlesque/main/" role="text/html">Voices of Oregon Burlesque</extref> web portal.

<p>The Oregon Burlesque Performers and Producers Oral History Collection consists of thirty-two born digital, video-recorded interviews led by Laurie Kurutz, a Professor of Costume Technology at Southern Oregon University's Oregon Center for the Arts. About half of the interviews were recorded in-person from December 2019 to February 2020. All but two others were conducted over Zoom. The interviews were transcribed by Kurutz, who also provided biographical sketches and interview abstracts for each of the sessions, as well as scans of signed paper permissions forms. The full contents of the collection are available online through a dedicated project portal, <extref show="new" actuate="onrequest" href="https://scarc.library.oregonstate.edu/omeka/exhibits/show/burlesque/main/" role="text/html">Voices of Oregon Burlesque</extref>, that was created by the OSU Libraries Special Collections and Archives Research Center.</p>
<p>In each of the interviews, narrators provide an overview of their life trajectory and describe how they came to be involved in the burlesque community, with several narrators emphasizing childhood interests in theater and dance. In many instances, narrators were born outside of Oregon, but each of them eventually moved to the state. While the bulk of the interviews are recorded with residents of Portland, narrators representing the burlesque communities in Eugene, Bend, and Ashland are also included.</p>
<p>At the beginning of each interview, narrators are asked to provide their definition of burlesque, a topic that often leads to discussions of the relationship - real or perceived - between burlesque and club stripping or sex work. Narrators also discuss their creative process in developing their own performances or producing others and, in particular, the labor and care that they devote to costuming. Issues of personal and cultural identity are commonly discussed in the interviews, with themes of body positivity as well as LGBTQ+ and BIPOC agency and empowerment surfacing as major themes. The tradition of burlesque as a political act or forum for social commentary is also called out by the narrators.</p>
<p>Burlesque as an industry in the Pacific Northwest is likewise a notable topic, with narrators discussing the creation, management and growth of events including the Oregon Burlesque Festival, Metalesque, and Burlycon, as well as the role that burlesque schools and workshops have played in advancing the community. As nearly half of the interviews were conducted in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, topics related to the coronavirus and the disruption that it caused are also frequently mentioned. Additional topics that emerge across the collection include the intersection of burlesque and social media, performers' interactions with their audiences, major figures in the community, and the sense of inclusivity and belonging that many performers and producers share with one another.</p>
