Marvin Dement Boland (1873-1950) was a photographer based in Tacoma, Washington. Boland was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and moved to Washington in 1912 to teach manual arts, i.e. vocational education, in various Tacoma schools. In a career spanning forty years, Boland owned several photographic studios in Tacoma between 1915 and 1949. A prolific photographer, Boland's subjects were diverse and included architecture, landscapes, and industry.
Photographs primarily feature images of a cross-state hike undertaken by the newly motorized 10th Field Artillery Regiment from Fort Lewis, Tacoma, to Fort George Wright, Spokane, in 1936. Approximately one third of the photographs document the Spalding Centennial celebration parade that took place on May 8, 1936 in Lewiston, Idaho, and in which the 10th Field Artillery Regiment marched. Other photographs feature sites near and in Cle Elum, Ellensburg, Grand Coulee Dam, Dry Falls, Steam Boat Rock, Mason City, Colfax, Lewiston Hill, Walla Walla, Fort George Wright, and the Columbia Gorge. Most photos feature hand-lettered note in bottom left corner: "10 F.A. Hike / 1936." Each photo is signed by Boland in the bottom right corner along with a catalog number belonging to a sequence: A2186-A2336. Title on case: "Boland Panoramas" on 3 x 12 cm printed label with double border on parchment paper.
Sixty 13 x 21 cm sheets housed in 13 x 22 cm tri-fold linen case. Each page features two black and white 6 x 17 cm original panoramic photographs.
