<bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">

Professor Francis Marion Webster was born in Lebanon, New Hampshire on August 8, 1849. His career as an entomologist began with his first published writings appearing in the Chicago Inter Ocean on July 2, 1874, titled "Notes on some of the Common Injurious Insects." He was later in charge of the Cereal and Forage Insect Investigations in the United States Bureau of Entomology, and served as assistant state entomologist of Illinois between 1882 and 1884. Afterwards, he was appointed special field agent to the United States Department of Agriculture, 1884-1892. He earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Ohio in 1893.

Webster's research took him to Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. In 1904, he moved to Washington, D.C. and was placed in charge of the newly created section of Cereal and Forage Insect Investigations in the Department of Agriculture, a position he held until his death in 1916.

Francis Marion Webster was the father of R. L. Webster, faculty member at Washington State College from 1926 to 1950.
