V. "Vim" Crane Wright was born on June 4, 1926 in Istanbul, Turkey as Lizetta Iacovidis and moved to the United States in 1938 where she was adopted by General John Alden and Mary McKim Crane. She took the new name of Violet Crane and married Edward Wright Jr. in the 1940's. After a divorce in the mid-1950's and several moves to Spain and Maryland, Wright moved with her two sons to Denver in 1960. Vim discovered bird watching in Colorado and turned her passion into a lifelong concern for and political activism on behalf of protecting the natural world. Her nickname "Vim" referred to her energy and zest for life and became her preferred name for the rest of her life. She served as the president of the Denver Audubon and on the board of the National Audubon Society, as well as the president for the statewide organization that eventually grew into the Colorado Environmental Council.

In 1977, Wright moved to Seattle, Washington to take the position of Assistant Director of the University of Washington's Institute of Environmental Studies. She taught graduate courses in Environmental Studies, offered campus lectures, and directed the Environmental Studies internship program. Vim also continued to advocate grassroots environmental efforts through her service on the board of the Washington Environmental Council, as member and chair of the Washington State Conservation Commission, and helping to establish the People for Puget Sound, the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, and Earth Share. In November 2002, she was awarded the Environmental Hero award from the Washington Environmental Council in recognition of her pioneering role in launching Farming and the Environment, a program charged with helping farmers and environmentalists reach their common goal to improve land stewardship to benefit wildlife. Vim Wright died on June 1, 2003 in Seattle, Washington.
