the DepartmentThe Department of Psychology first formed at the UW in 1917 when it
split from the former Department of Philosophy and Psychology. The faculty
consisted of chair Stevenson Smith, who would serve in the role for more than
three decades, and Edwin Guthrie, namesake of the department’s current home,
Guthrie Hall. By the 1950s, the department had grown to 23 faculty. A hiring
surge tripled this number in the 1960s. Notable alumni include Neal Miller
(1931), who worked with Professor Guthrie as an undergraduate and went on to
discover biofeedback and do groundbreaking work on the influence of emotions on
behavior.
As of 2017, the department is among the largest recipients of federal
research grants in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of
Washington.
