John Charles Frémont (1813-1890) was one of the most influential explorers and geographers of the American West. Among others, he was responsible for several surveying expeditions, including the 1841 survey of the lower waters of the Des Moines River, the exploration of South Pass and its vicinity in Wyoming, and the survey of the pass and ascent of Fremont’s Peak in the Wind River Range. Frémont was also a California senator, governor of Arizona, and became a presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 1856.
Collection contains biographical information, newspaper and magazine articles about Frémont’s life and career; articles, documents, and speeches, including Frémont’s acceptance of the Republican presidential nomination; facts concerning his California operations, senate bills, admission of California to the Union; and speeches of T. H. Benton, Stephen A. Douglas, Truman Smith, P. Phillips, William S. Barry, A. G. Brown, and others.
There are no access restrictions on the materials for research purposes, and the collection is open to the public.
