         <p>Professor of sociology, University of Washington.</p>
         <p>Stuart Carter Dodd was born in 1900 in Turkey. He was educated at Princeton University where he received a B.S. in 1922, M.A. in 1924, and Ph.D. in 1926. Dodd joined the faculty of the American University in Beirut, where he founded the school's sociology department and served as its chairman, from 1927-1947. During World War II, he served as an Army lieutenant colonel in the psychological-warfare branch of Allied headquarters in Sicily and London. After the war, he was co-chairman, with George Gallup, of the World Association for Public Opinion, a consulting organization to the United Nations. He served as the director of the Washington Public Opinion Laboratory at the University of Washington from 1947 to 1961. He was associated with the Behavioral Science Council, 1959-1961; and the Behavioral Science Research Council,1962-1965. He retired from the U.W. faculty in 1971 and was elected professor emeritus. Dodd died in 1975.</p>
