		  the University of Washington Puppeteers</abstract></did><bioghist encodinganalog="5450_" id="a2"><p>From 1934-1941 WPA government programs sponsored thousands of puppet
		  shows around the country. In 1934 Glenn Hughes began a puppetry department at
		  the University of Washington in Seattle. By the 1940s, Glenn Hughes’s program
		  at the University of Washington developed one of the finest educational
		  programs in the nation for children’s theater. In 1936 the U of W Puppeteers
		  became the first touring unit of the theater department, playing to more than
