Biography of Emma Cross Morton

Emma Criss Cross Morton was one of ten children of George Harry and Lea Marie (Levassuer) Cross. She grew up on the Braehead Ranch located southwest of Douglas, Wyoming, in Converse County. The ranch was built by her father George who was a successful cattle rancher and businessman as well as a government official who served as a senator from Converse County in the third, fourth, fifth, tenth, and eleventh sessions of the state legislature. He was elected one of the first three Converse County Commissioners and was the Postmaster of Beaver, Wyoming from 1893 to 1909. Braehead Ranch, named after Cross’s ancestral home in Scotland, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

 <scopecontent encodinganalog="520">

Scope and Content

The Braehead Memories manuscript incorporates the three-volume memoirs of her father, pioneer ranchman George Harry Cross. It includes ancestral history and tells the story of his life and the life of his family through first person narrative, and copies of letters, photographs, business records, newspaper clippings, drawings, and other documents. It begins with Cross’s birth in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, tells of his trek to Wyoming Territory in 1875, becoming a cowboy and his start in the cattle business, applying for citizenship in Wyoming in 1883, and building the famous Braehead ranch near Douglas, Wyoming. It also tells of the five terms he served as a state senator for Converse County. The manuscript contains a great deal of history about cattle ranching in Wyoming, the town of Douglas, Converse County, Fort Fetterman, cattle brands, politics, and Wyoming history in general.
