The Queer History Research Collection is a part of the OSU Queer Archives (OSQA). The mission of OSQA is to preserve and share the stories, histories, and experiences of LGBTQ+ people within the Oregon State University and Corvallis communities. OSQA was established in the Fall of 2014. OSQA's mission is rooted in three central commitments: (1) fostering intersectional community activism, (2) resisting erasure of queer and trans narratives, and (3) positioning the collection as a space to imagine alternative futures for LGBTQ+ communities and people.

On June 15, 2016, students, staff, faculty, and community members gathered at OSU’s Student Experience Center to pay tribute to the 49 people killed in an Orlando LGBTQ+ nightclub. Attendees were invited to share their thoughts and reflections to add to the altar that remained in the space for the days that followed. The artifacts available here are the contributions that were left. The vigil was hosted by Diversity & Cultural Engagement. These materials were digitized before being sent to Valencia College, and those copies are fully digital and available upon request.

(0:55:12) A digitized MiniDV tape of a recording of a event at the Pride Center concerning the creation of the Pride Center from those involved with it.

Summary: The video begins with a group of individuals watching a recording of the 2001 Spring ASOSU hearing for the funding of the Queer Resource Center (QRC), now called the Pride Center. After about 6 minutes, the group is welcomed and it is explained that there are old Barometer articles and surveys around the room, and that this is being recorded in order to begin preserving their history as a part of Queer History Month. The presenters are then introduced: Linda Paschke, Pride Center Advisory Board Member; Robin Ryan, Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Involvement; Luke Sugie, Pride Center internal coordinator; and Beth Rietveld, director of the Women’s Center, now the Hattie Redmond Women and Gender Center. They follow along a framework of pre-QRC, QRC, creation of the Pride Center space, sharing their stories and experiences of the history in each of these areas. In pre-QRC, Rietveld discusses her work at the Women’s Center, and the others share the culture surrounding queer rights in Corvallis, and the gay student club now known as the Rainbow Continuum. The group then moves on to discussing the effort to create the QRC and the ASOSU hearing that occurred to obtain funding. Lastly, they discuss the creation of the QRC building, the change to the name “the Pride Center,” the earlier programs they created, and how they improved.

Starting at 19:53, there is an audio issue that resolves itself around 30:00. The video ends with ten seconds of distortion and no sound, cutting off the recording before the end of the event.

The Rural Organizing Project (ROP) started in 1992 as a response to the Oregon Citizens Alliance (Box-Folder 5.2) and their discrimination against queer Oregonians. They are a queer-led organization that works with a network of human dignity groups to promote equity and inclusion through democratic processes. This folder contains newsletters from ROPnet, ROP's newsletter, that pertain to other queer rural groups, organizing, events, and calls to action from the organization.
