This collection is comprised of the copy council minutes concerning Haslemere's seat in the House of Commons. Peter Burrell held the seat from 1722-1754. Upon his death in 1756 his son, Peter Burrell II, attempted to claim the seat for his own, as was traditional practice in what were, at the time, called rotten burroughs . Burrell II was eventually named to Launceston, but continued to be active in the political scene at Haslemere, supporting Richard Muilman and Thomas Parker against Thomas More Molyneux and Philip Carteret Webb in the 1761 election. This election seems to be the subject of debate in these council minutes.
