         <p>Scottish engineer John Loudon McAdam developed the "macadamized road" to withstand increased traffic and to enable improved water run-off. The Portland and Milwaukie Macadamized Road Company built a macadamized toll road to connect Portland with Taylor's Ferry, which crossed the Willamette River to Milwaukie. This road is now named Macadam Avenue. </p>
         <p>The Portland and Milwaukie Macadamized Road Company was incorporated by S. G. Reed, George F. Thomas, John Green, Lloyd Brooke, Amory Holbrook, and Henry Failing. The company was sold to Multnomah County in 1879.</p>
