      <head>Biography of Ruth Hannas</head> 
      
      <p>Ruth Hannas (1893-1976) was a musician and professor of music at the Woman’s College, University of North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina. Hannas received her Ph.D. in music from Eastman School in 1934, the first woman to do so in the United States. Her dissertation was titled Evolution of Harmonic Consciousness. After teaching at various schools in California, Hannas accepted the position of Head of the Theory Department at the University of North Carolina.</p>

      <p>Collection contains 30 items of correspondence, including letters from composer Ernst Krenek; photographs of musical personalities; 17 musical pieces; 3 newspaper clippings on Krenek; 4 guide books; 23 brochures, programs, maps, and cards from the International Bonn Festival that honored the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig von Beethoven; 3 items from the Lincoln Center; 12 works of art by Howard B. Schleeter; and the diploma of Belle Moore, a 1903 graduate of the University of Wyoming who went on to pursue higher education in music at the New England Conservatory.</p>
