In 1888 Eric A. Hegg opened his first studio in Washington in Sehome, also known as New Whatcom, on Bellingham Bay. A year or two later he set up a second studio in Fairhaven, a growing logging and mining community. Hearing news of gold strikes in the Klondike River Valley, Yukon Territory, in September or October of 1897, he joined a party of Bellingham men who had chartered the
The party of Larss and Hegg arrived in Dawson City on June 20, 1898, where they established a studio on the waterfront between First and Second Streets. Larss and Hegg joined in formal partnership in September 1898. Their studio, however, suffered severe loss when fire broke out in Dawson City in Oct. 1898. Later George Cantwell was taken on to assist with outside photographic work. In August of 1899, Hegg sold his interest in his Dawson City studio to Larss, who had entered into partnership with Joseph Duclos, and headed for Nome. Subsequently he published a souvenir booklet entitled "Alaska-Yukon Souvenir" (1900). He left Nome in 1902. It is uncertain when Hegg finally left Alaska, but between the years 1905 and 1918, he worked in Juneau and later in Cordova where he signed on as company photographer during the construction of the Copper River and Northwestern Railroad for the Guggenheims. His firm specialized in art and commercial photography, Alaska souvenirs, postcards, and views. When Hegg finally left Alaska, he worked in Hawaii for a San Francisco newspaper for a year or so. He later returned to Bellingham and died in San Diego in December, 1947.

The images in the Hegg collection consist of photographs found in the 33 Hegg albums, contact prints made from the 442 6 ½ x 8 ½ glass negatives, and individual original Hegg photographs not from the initial Hegg donation. The Hegg albums are located in the Special Collections vault along with 3 boxes of original Hegg photographs (Boxes 10-12).
The photographs document gold rush localities and activities in the Klondike River Valley of Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada circa 1887-1903, including images of the White Pass Trail, the Chilkoot Trail, Dawson City, Nome, Skagway, steamboats, dogsleding, Alaska Natives, and more.
Copy and contact prints were made from the original negatives and photographic prints, and are available for public use in the Special Collections division, University of Washington Libraries.
Some of the original negatives have Webster & Stevens numbers and studio signatures, though they are original Hegg negatives. These negatives were acquired by Webster & Stevens in 1902 during Hegg's bitter divorce from his wife Ella (who operated the Skagway studio at the time). She sold many of his negatives and photographs to Webster & Stevens, who subsequently removed the Hegg studio imprint from the negatives and sold prints made from these negatives as products of their studio. These images are noted accordingly in the finding aid.
The original photographs and negatives are not available for use due to preservation concerns.

This was likely taken in Hegg's studio.
The station was established in 1892 by Sheldon Jackson, a Presbyterian minister and the Commissioner of Education in Alaska, and was named for Henry M. Teller, Secretary of the Interior. It was established as part of an effort, known as the Alaska Reindeer Service, to transport domestic reindeer from Siberia to Western Alaska in order to try to solve the Native Alaskans' food shortage problem. The goal of the Service was to train the indigenous peoples of Alaska, through an apprenticeship system, in the care for and use of domestic reindeer. Ultimately, the service hoped to establish the practice of herding among the indigenous peoples of Seward Peninsula on a self-supporting basis. Sheldon Jackson brought Sami herders from Norway to Alaska so they could teach apprentice Alaskan Natives various herding techniques. In turn, upon satisfactory termination of their apprenticeship, herders would be charged with their own herd of reindeer and expected to take on apprentices themselves, thus expanding the enterprise.

Major James Walsh was the gold commissioner in Dawson City for a brief period of time in 1898. Walsh replaced his predecessor, Thomas Fawcett, who was relieved by the Canadian government over allegations of corruption. Walsh arrived in May, 1898, but soon fell ill and returned east in July,

'Cheechako' was a slang term for a person newly arrived in the mining districts of Alaska and northwestern Canada, especially those unaccustomed to the hardships of pioneer life. A more commonly used term is 'tenderfoot.'
King Solomon's Dome is a mountain peak located 20 miles southeast of Dawson that is believed to be the source of the gold fields that sparked the Klondike Gold Rush. During the gold rush, the mountain was the site of large-scale mining and excavation.

George Carmack was originally credited with registering Discovery Claim at Bonanza Creek, Yukon. The site of the claim is widely considered to be the place where the Klondike Gold Rush started. While at the time many considered Carmack to be the one who discovered gold at Discovery Claim, today, historians usually give credit to Carmack's Canadian brother-in-law, Skookum Jim Mason. In the caption on the photo, Hegg mistakenly identifies Carmack as 'McCormick.'

T. S. Lippy, the president of the Seattle Y.M.C.A., was one of the prospectors to strike it rich during the Klondike Gold Rush. After returning to Seattle, Lippy made generous contributions to both the Y.M.C.A. and the First United Methodist Church of Seattle. He also helped found the Seattle General Hospital, initially established in 1895, which reopened in 1900 after the construction of a new building at 909 Fifth Avenue in Seattle.

Hydraulic mining is a method of mining that uses high-pressure jets of water to dislodge rock material or move sediment. In placer mining, the type that occurred during the Klondike and Nome gold rushes, the resulting slurry of water and sediment is directed through sluice boxes to remove the gold.

'Hydraulicking' is another term for hydraulic mining.
Charles D. Lane was a millionaire mine owner, recognized as one of the founders of Nome, Alaska, who headed the Wild Goose Mining & Trading Co. and helped develop legitimate mining claims in Nome. In 1898, he missed an opportunity to be one of the initial discoverers of gold near Nome when he briefly returned to California after setbacks with his mines and claims in Silver Bow Basin near Juneau, Alaska. However, Lane sent an associate named Gabe Price with a large party to investigate rumors of gold in Kotzebue County. Price was in the nearby town of Golovin when Lindeberg, Lindblom and Brynteson, the "Three Lucky Swedes," discovered gold at Anvil Creek near Nome in 1898, sparking the Nome Gold Rush. Though Price missed his chance to get Lane involved in early claim-staking, when he traveled to Nome to meet the three prospectors, he was impressed enough to commit Lane to help develop the new mines and defend them from claim jumping, which was initially a serious problem in Nome.
Lane was directly involved in one of the most important legal battles in early Nome history against claim jumpers, paving the way for greater law and order in Nome. Lane took legal action against Alexander McKenzie and Alfred Noyes, a corrupt Judge of the Federal Court. McKenzie and Noyes essentially established a receivership racket and illegally mined others' claims. In order to do this, the two men would hire others to claim jump; when legitimate claim owners appeared in court to settle their disputes with claim jumpers, Noyes would put the claims into receiverships to be administered by McKenzie while Noyes considered the disputes. In the meantime, McKenzie, as receiver of the disputed claims, would then hire men to mine them. Charles Lane ultimately put an end to McKenzie and Noyes' scheme when he, as a legitimate claim owner, took his case to the circuit court of appeals in San Francisco, ultimately leading to the arrests of McKenzie and Noyes by US Marshals. Judge James Wickersham was then brought in from the Third Judicial District to settle the remaining cases and restore claims to their rightful owners.
As head of the Wild Goose Mining & Trading Co., Lane established the Wild Goose Railroad, which ran from Nome through Anvil Gulch to Dexter, Alaska. The Wild Goose Company, at least in Nome's early days, was rivaled only by the Pioneer Mining Company.
Mary's Igloo was an Inupiat village that became an important transfer point for supplies for the gold fields upriver on the Kuzitrin and Kougarok Rivers. Non-natives named the village Mary's Igloo after an Inupiat woman named Mary who welcomed miners, trappers, and others into her home for coffee. By 1910, Mary's Igloo was a large community of Inupiat and Anglo-Americans.
Dahl City appears to be more of a small settlement for miners along the creek than an actual city.

Treadwell Mine was a gold mine on the southern side of Doulgas Island (across the Gastineau Channel from Juneau), owned and operated by John Treadwell. After prospectors Joseph 'Joe' Juneau and Richard Harris discovered gold in the Silver Bow Basin in 1880, waves of prospectors flooded the area. John Treadwell purchased a lode claim on Douglas Island from Pierre Joseph Erussard on September 13, 1881, thereafter establishing Treadwell Mine. Comprised of four sub-sites, in its time Treadwell Mine was the largest hard rock gold mine in the world. From 1881-1922, an excess of 3 million troy ounces of gold were extracted from the mine.

In the late 19th century, Norwegian immigrant Peter Buschmann built the cannery, a sawmill, and early structures at the site that would become Petersburg. The city was named for Buschmann when it was incorporated as a town on April 2, 1910.

Frank H. Reid was an American solider, teacher, city engineer, vigilante, and one of the fatal combatants at the Shootout on Juneau Wharf on July 8, 1898, which resulted in the death of con artist and crime boss "Soapy" Smith. The shootout itself began after an argument and subsequent armed altercation on Juneau wharf between Smith and Reid, during which both men shot each other. Whereas Smith fatally wounded Reid with a shot to the abdomen and groin with his Winchester rifle (Reid died of his wounds 12 days later), despite wounding Smith, Reid did not fire the fatal shot that killed Smith. Jesse Murphy, after wrestling the Winchester rifle from Smith's hands, fatally shot Smith in the heart. Despite his reputation being far from untarnished, Reid's funeral was the largest in Skagway's history. His gravestone, pictured here, is inscribed: He gave his life for the honor of Skagway.

In the late 1800s, when bicycle riding first became popular, Snohomish Bicycle Club president (and Civil War veteran) David Lewis Paramore led an effort to make a large cedar tree along a new bicycle path near Snohomish a milestone. An arch was subsequently cut into the tree so that people could ride their bicycles underneath the tree, and the "Bicycle Tree" became a popular spot for bicyclists and locals.

The caption on the photo mistakenly labels the event as the driving of the golden spike on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. However, the golden spike was not driven until July 29, 1900 in Carcross, Yukon Territory. The railway actually reached Bennett, British Columbia on July 6, 1899, before construction started north from Carcross to Whitehorse in the summer of 1899.

The Sámi people are an indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the Arctic area of Sápmi, encompassing parts of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. Those pictured here are likely part of the group of Sámi reindeer herders that were brought to Alaska from Norway to help train Native Alaskan peoples in herding reindeer as part of the Alaska Reindeer Service.
Port Simpson is an indigenous village community in British Columbia.

Willoughby, a prospector, acquired a blurry photograph of Bristol from an English photographer, and subsequently passed it off as a photo of a mirage of a city he saw in the mist while in Alaska. Though the photograph was later proved to be a hoax, Willoughby still managed to sell thousands of copies of the photo.
Contains photographs of Seattle and includes downtown street scenes in Pioneer Square and the Central Business District, and images of a waterfront pier, Trinity Church on James and 8th, Broadway High School, the King County Courthouse, and Seattle streets by night. There are also lumber industry photographs, depicting tree felling, loading logs with donkey engines, and a skid road; and fishing industry pictures showing fish traps. A skid road is a road along which logs are hauled.
Steam donkey, or donkey engine, was the common nickname for a steam-powered winch or logging engine. While also used in other industries, it was most widely used in logging operations. Operators of steam donkeys were colloquially known as "donkey punchers."
Commercial fish traps were a modification of Indian methods of harvesting salmon during salmon runs.

In 1899, a group of businessmen removed a Tlingit totem pole from a village in Alaska and placed it in Pioneer Square. An arsonist burned it down in 1938, after which the city sent the remaining pieces back to the tribe. The tribe then carved a new totem pole and sent it to Seattle after being paid for the original. The new totem pole still stands today.

After Eric Hegg left Alaska for the last time (circa 1918), he worked in Hawaii on assignment for a San Francisco newspaper. Hegg was in Hawaii for roughly a year, mainly on the islands of O'ahu (the location of Honolulu) and Hawai'i.

A hale is a type of grass house, which are common dwellings found throughout Polynesia. Native Hawaiians are descended from Polynesians that settled the Hawaiian islands.

People of Japanese descent make up the second-largest ethnic group in Hawaii.
King Kamehameha I was a Hawaiian king that conquered most of the Hawaiian islands, and formally established the Kingdom of Hawai'i in 1810. This statue stands prominently in front of Ali'iolani Hale in Honolulu. The original casting of the statue was put on board a ship that wrecked near the Falkland Islands, where it was presumed lost. A second casting of the statue was made and brought to Ali'iolani Hale. The original was eventually recovered and now stands at Kapa'au on the northern tip of the island of Hawai'i.

'Iolani Palace was the royal residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii, beginning with Kamehameha III and ending with Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Diamond head is the name of a volcanic crater on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu.
"Poi" is the Hawaiian name for the primary Polynesian staple food made from the starchy underground plant stem, or corm, of the taro plant. Poi is produced by mashing the cooked corm until it becomes a highly-viscous liquid. Poi was considered to be an important and sacred aspect of daily Hawaiian life.

This appears to be a copy negative of a Hegg photo.
"Larss & Duclos" is written on the negative. Hegg left his Dawson City studio to Larss (Hegg's business partner) and DuClos took over after he returned to Skagway in 1899.
"White Chapel" was an alley in Dawson City lined with small cribs or hutches where prostitutes plied their trade (Porsild, 1998).
