Taped-recorded interviews conducted by Larry Gossett, May 15,
1968.

Mr. Goodwin talks about his experiences as a black, professional
baseball player who arrived in Seattle in 1922. He worked as a seaman, for Ben
Paris restaurants, and for United Airlines. The black popultion in general had
jobs as bellhops, janitors, porters, etc., in the twenties, but lost a number
of these jobs to Asians who worked for lower wages. Black pimps were the
wealthiest blacks in the twenties. During WWII many of these people were able
to stop pimping and get good paying jobs. A migration from the South began
during WWII also for better paying jobs, in shipyards for instance. This
migration included southern whites and blacks, about 3 to 1. Racial conflicts
grew in Seattle as a result of this migration.
