      <p>This collection contains 40 photographic prints of Lewis B. Schwellenbach. Subjects include Schwellenbach's time at the University of Washington, serving in the Army, his election to the US Senate, his appointment and swearing in as a U.S. District judge, and his time as Secretary of Labor. There are numerous photographs of Schwellenbach with other political figures from the 1930s and 1940s.</p>

    <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
      <p>Lewis Baxter Schwellenbach (September 20, 1894–June 10, 1948) was born in Superior, Wisconsin and moved to Spokane, Washington in 1902. Schwellenbach was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from January 3, 1935, to December 16, 1940, when he resigned to become a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. He served as the 5th United States Secretary of Labor from 1945 until his death in 1948.</p>

Truman; First Lady Bess Truman; Margaret Truman; Vice President John Garner; Vice President Alben Barkley; Senators Hugo Black (AL), Henry F. Ashurst (AZ), Hiram Johnson (CA), Walter George (GA), Sherman Minton (IN), Alben Barkley (KY), Arthur Vandenberg (MI), Pat Harrison (MS),  James E. Murray (MT), Edward R. Burke (NE), Key Pittman (NV), Robert A. Taft (OH), Joseph Guffey (PA), Theodore Green (RI), James F. Byrnes (SC), Thomas Connally (TX), Robert La Follette (WI), and Matthew Neely (WV); Rep. Fiorello La Guardia (NY); Correspondence Secretary Marvin McIntyre; Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson; and cartoonist George McManus. </p>
          <p>A photograph of President Truman's cabinet includes Robert A. Lovett (Defense) James Forrestal (Navy, Defense), John Wesley Snyder (Treasury), Tom C. Clark (Attorney General), Robert E. Hannegan (Postmaster General), W. Averell Harriman (Commerce), Clinton Anderson (Agriculture), Julius Albery Krug (Interior), and Lewis B. Schwellenbach (Labor).</p>
          <p>A photograph of President Truman announcing the end of World War II includes Admiral William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff; Secretary of State James F. Byrnes; Cordell Hull, Secretary of State under President Roosevelt; Secretary of the Interior Julius Albery Krug; Foreign Economic Administrator Leo T. Crowley; Major General Philip Bracken Fleming; Director of Economic Stabilization William Hammatt Davis; Secretary of the Treasury John Wesley Snyder; Secretary of Defense James Forrestal; Attorney General Tom C. Clark; and Secretary of Labor Lewis B. Schwellenbach. </p>
