This collection contains 40 photographic prints of Lewis B. Schwellenbach. Subjects include Schwellenbach's time at the University of Washington, serving in the Army, his election to the US Senate, his appointment and swearing in as a U.S. District judge, and his time as Secretary of Labor. There are numerous photographs of Schwellenbach with other political figures from the 1930s and 1940s.
Lewis Baxter Schwellenbach (September 20, 1894–June 10, 1948) was born in Superior, Wisconsin and moved to Spokane, Washington in 1902. Schwellenbach was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from January 3, 1935, to December 16, 1940, when he resigned to become a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. He served as the 5th United States Secretary of Labor from 1945 until his death in 1948.
