    <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
      <p>Bertil H. van Boer (b. 1952) is a musicologist, composer, conductor, and violist. He earned
        a PhD in Musicology from Uppsala University in Sweden in 1983. He retired from Western
        Washington University in 2022, having served as Dean of the College of Fine and Performing
        Arts (1996-2002) and Professor of Musicology and Music Theory (2002-2022). Prior to coming
        to WWU, he held positions at Wichita State University, the Conservatorio Nacional of
        Nicaragua, Shasta College, and Brigham Young University.</p>
      <p>Dr. van Boer is the author of several books, articles, and musical editions, and has
        regularly contributed to the Grove Dictionary of Opera and Grove Dictionary of Music. His
        specialty is music of the eighteenth century, particularly in Scandinavia, with focus on the
        composer Joseph Martin Kraus. His compositions have been performed in Nicaragua, Austria,
        Sweden, and the United States. He serves as a musical consultant for Naxos Records and has
        been involved with the Royal Opera and Royal Swedish Academy of Music on various
        projects.</p>

      <p>The collection consists primarily of professional correspondence with colleagues in Europe
        and the United States; correspondence with publishers; and documentation of van Boer's
        career as a teacher and college administrator. One folder contains newspaper clippings and
        other materials related to Joseph Martin Kraus.</p>
