John Morton was one of the prebendaries (senior clergy) of the Cathedral Church of Christ and Blessed Mary the Virgin in Durham. At the time this document was executed, he was engaged to Syth Robinson. Another party to the agreement, James Cooke, was Syth Robinson's brother-in-law.
This collection consists of a single item: a manuscript document written on one membrane of parchment (34 x 56 cm), in a secretary hand. It is a tripartite indenture dated December 29, 1691, documenting a transfer of several properties in the county of Durham, England. The parties to the agreement, all from Durham, are John Morton, Thomas Davison and James Cooke, and Syth Robinson, Morton's fiancée. Under the terms of the document, in exchange for five shillings and an annual rent of "one pepper Corne" to be paid at Pentecost, Morton released his interest in a farm, Little White, and several closes (Burtree, Buckfield, Meadow field, Broom, Lamb, Little White Dean, and Lady's Close).
The document has a wax seal, and includes the signatures of several witnesses on the verso. At the time the collection was processed, the document was partially transcribed.
