John Owen Beaty, educator and author, was born in Crow West Virginia on December 22, 1890. He received his B.A. and M.A. from the University in 1921. In 1919 Beaty joined the English faculty of Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. He steadily advanced to full professor ranks in 1922, the post he held until his retirement in 1957. He then moved to Orange County, Virginia where he resided until his death in 1961. In 1926-1927 Beaty, on a fellowship, traveled around the world reporting on world affairs. He wrote of his experiences in a report, "Race and Population, Their Relation to World Peace." Beaty was the author or co-author of several books. Many pertained to his English profession, but in 1947 he wrote a short history of the Military Intelligence Service based on his service in World War II.
The collection includes correspondence with several prominent conservatives such as William F. Buckley, Pedro A. del Valle, Merwin K. Hart, and George W. Robnett; articles and pamphlets written by Beaty; and correspondence of his wife, Josephine Powell Beaty, who was also active in conservative circles.
