      <p>Mads Christensen was a Danish convert to the LDS Church. He became a polygamist and was arrested for unlawful cohabitation on 13 February 1888. He served a seven month prison term.</p>

    <scopecontent encodinganalog="5202_">
      <p>The Mads Christensen papers (1869-1913) consist of an autograph book (1887-1888) given to Christensen by fellow LDS polygamist prisoners in the Utah Penitentiary. The autographs are mostly poems, although some of the ninety-one authors just signed their names and addresses. The papers also consist of Christensen's citizenship certificate, a letter, and biographical materials.  Phyllis Christensen's biographies (undated) of Mads Christensen and Hannah Margretta Christiansen Christensen are also included.</p>

      <p>Twenty-four hour advanced notice encouraged. Materials must be used on-site. Access to parts of this collection may be restricted under provisions of state or federal law.</p>
      <p>The original autograph album has been removed and placed in Reserve.  This box contains a photocopied version for access purposes.  Access to the original must be given by the Manuscripts Curator and by appointment.  An archivist must remain with the item if being used.</p>
