<p>Henry Beebee Carrington was born in Wallingford, Connecticut on March
2, 1824. He graduated from Yale University in 1845 (B.A.) and attended Yale
University Law School in 1847. He practiced law in Ohio. During the Civil War
he was appointed colonel of the 18th U.S. Infantry (May, 1861) and brigadier
general of volunteers (Nov, 1862). Carrington supervised military tribunals in
Indiana and Ohio, trials later ruled "illegal" by the Supreme Court. He was
mustered out of volunteer service in 1865. He joined his regiment in 1866 and
established Fort Philip Kearney in the Dakota Territory. He led military
campaigns against the Sioux Indians, negotiated the 1872 treaty with the
Salish People of Montana and was in charge of their removal to the Flathead Reservation
in 1891, and conducted relocation and census studies of other tribes.
Carrington wrote several popular American history texts. He died in Hyde Park,
		  Massachusetts on October 26, 1912.</p>

<p>The collection consists of a photocopy of Carrington’s undated
typescript reminiscence,<emph>The Exodus of the Flatheads from Their Ancestral
Home in the Garden Valley, Montana to the Jocko Reservation, Montana</emph>,
which describes his perspective of the 1891 removal of Salish people
from the Bitterroot Valley to the Jocko Valley, where a portion of the tribe
had already been settled. There are handwritten corrections and other
annotations that vary through several copies of each sub-section of the
manuscript. He gives a summary of Western settlement and Indian removal, a
description of the Bitterroot Valley including its early white settlement, and
describes the attempt to remove the Salish in 1889 that was resumed in 1891.
He gives an extensive account of his negotiations with Chief Charlo and other
parties. There is a typescript copy of the 1872 treaty that he negotiated with
the Flatheads, and several appendixes concerned with sources and value of
		  reservation land.</p>
