Biography of Duncan S. Harris

Duncan S. Harris was a University of Wyoming professor of English and director of the Honors Program. He was born February 22, 1944, in Worland, Wyoming, eventually moving to California. He received his BA from Stanford in 1965 and PhD from Brandeis in 1971. Duncan was hired to teach English at the University of Wyoming in 1970. Being a scholar of Shakespeare, he headed the London Semester program, which gave students the opportunity to travel to London and Stratford to learn about the Bard in the areas he lived. He also served as the director of the UW Honors Program, eventually retiring in 2014. Among his many achievements, Duncan was awarded the Ellbogen Lifetime Achievement Award and the Trustees’ Award of Merit. Duncan Harris was married to Janice H. Harris, also a University of Wyoming professor of English. He passed away in May 2019.

The Harris family consisted of Nadine Nostrum Harris, Arden Seely Harris, and their two children Duncan S. Harris and Andrea Dee Harris Mahoney. At the time of Duncan’s birth, his father, Arden Seely Harris, was serving in the Navy in the Pacific. Upon his return, the young family moved to California. Over the next two decades, Duncan and his sister spent summers in Thermopolis where Duncan would prospect in the Gas Hills for uranium with his grandfather, and winter in California. Duncan’s mother, Nadine, was the daughter of Helen and Alfred Nostrum of Thermopolis, Wyoming. Alfred Nostrum was part owner of the Aljob Mining Company which specialized in uranium. Nadine was also the granddaughter of Jacob and Amanda Nostrum, 1897 homesteaders in the Red Canyon up Owl Creek of Wyoming.
