Dr. Hessel completed his medical education at the University of California School of Medicine. After medical school, he completed a rotating internship at King County Hospital and a seven-year surgery residency at the University of Washington, during which he also completed a postdoctoral Research Fellowship with the NIH. Hessel as also a member of the team that performed first open heart surgery at the University of Washington. After 15 years as a cardiac surgeon and Associate Professor of surgery at the University of Washington, Dr. Hessel completed his anesthesiology residency, and then a cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Hessel is a Professor of Anesthesiology at the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky.
