years old when the family left Europe to settle in Duluth, Minnesota. He
graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School but soon realized that
the law would never be as fulfilling a career as the rabbinate. Rabbi Levine
was ordained at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio and offered a post
at the liberal synagogue in Liverpool, England, after which he was called to a
London synogogue. In 1941 he was asked to participate in a lecture tour of the
United States to let Americans know what was happening in Europe. While in
Seattle he was invited by members of the Temple De Hirsch to be guest rabbi at
a Friday evening service. As Rabbi Koch was retiring, Levine was invited to be
the new rabbi. He served as the rabbi at Temple de Hirsch, Seattle from 1942 to
1969. He was associated with the Seattle Chapter of People to People, and the
Seattle-King County Public Defender Demonstration Program. Rabbi Levine was
influential and active in the community especially in interfaith and
interracial dialogues. He appeared on a weekly television series, "Challenge,"
with Father William Treacy. Rabbi Levine was killed in an auto crash in
