<p>The University of Oregon had a "University Band" dating back to 1908, however the 1916 <emph render="italic ">Oregana</emph> indicates the University of Oregon Band officially began in 1911, directed by Maurice Hyde. From 1915-1918, Albert Perfect, writer of the University of Oregon fight song, "Mighty Oregon," served as the first salaried band director at the University. Perfect's replacement, Ross Hickernell, served as director for only one year (1919), thus leaving management of the band to the military department.</p>

<p>The band presented its first football halftime performance in 1929 under the direction of John Stehn. Stehn also organized an Army Special Training Units (ASTU) band at the University during the 1940s. In 1950, Stehn retired as Director of Bands, leaving the position to Robert Wagner and Ira Lee.</p>

<p>In 1976, Gerald Poe, founder of the Festival of Bands competition for high school marching bands, was hired to direct the marching band. His 1983 replacement, Steve Paul, built the marching band up from 90 members in his first year to over 250 members.</p>

<p>From the 1990s-2010s, under the direction of Sid Haton (1995-1999), Todd Zimbelman (1999-2005), Dr. Patrick Carney (2005-2006), and Dr. Eric Wiltshire (2006-present), the band has performed at numerous bowl games, including the Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and BCS National Championship among others.</p>

<p>Among materials in the records series are member directories, handbooks, clippings, newsletters, recruitment materials, and performance programs, as well as materials relating to the Green Garter Band, Oregon Marching Band Council, and hosted events, such as Festival of Bands. Of note are two copies of the University of Oregon fight song, "Mighty Oregon," one of which includes hand-drawn notes and handwritten lyrics while the other, copyright 1916 by Albert Perfect, is a second edition score published by The Music Shop in Eugene, Oregon.</p>

<p>The photographs and audiovisual series contains prints, negatives, slides, photo albums, and photo collages depicting Oregon Marching Band performances, rehearsals, and travel. A double LP entitled <emph render="italic ">Songs of Old Oregon</emph> (performed by the University of Oregon Band, directed by Robert S. Vagner and the University Singers, directed by Donald W. Allton) is also included in this series.</p>

<p>The artifacts series is primarily composed of Oregon Marching Band uniforms and uniform pieces, but also includes awards and memorabilia.</p>
