<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Although ultimately known as the president of the Denver and Salt Lake Railway Company and co-trustee of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company, McCarthy started out his career as a lawyer, graduating from Columbia University in 1913. Six years later he was appointed district judge of the Third Judicial District. He went on to become a senator in Salt Lake County, a regent for the University of Utah, and the western director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, among many other things.</p>
