Very little information is readily available about R. McConnell. According to the original catalog information for this item, he settled in Moscow, Idaho Territory in 1881, where he established a store. Prior to that he had been a traveling salesman in the southern United States. The 1869 diary tells of his travels from Cincinnati to New Orleans and on to Florida. In the 1881 portion of the diary, McConnell records his experiences looking for a location in the west for his family to relocate. McConnell traveled by railroad and water from Xenia, Illinois to various cities and towns in California, Oregon, and Washington Territory; the last entry is July 2, 1881.
