The Washington State Recreation Society was organized in April 1947 by a small group of professional recreation workers to promote high ethical and professional standards and to function as a support group for al recreation workers. In 1966 the name was changed from Washington State Recreation Society to Washington Recreation and Park Society. In 1977 it became the Washington Recreation and Park Association. It evolved into an association of professionals and citizens involved in recreation and park policy. An affiliate of the National Recreation and Park Association.
