      <abstract encodinganalog="5203_"> Cooks' and Waiters' Union, No. 22, was a
		  Butte, Montana, labor union affiliated with the Hotel and Restaurant
		  International Union. This collection consists of financial records (1930-1966)
		  comprised of membership ledgers including lists of members' names and records
		  of dues paid. </abstract>

      <head>Historical Note:</head>
      <p> The
		  Cooks' Assembly of the Knights of Labor was established in Butte, Montana, in
		  1896. The name was changed to the Cooks' and Waiters' Assembly, No. 3918, of
		  the Knights of Labor in 1897, and in 1899, to the Cooks' and Waiters', No. 2.
		  The early officers included George W. Morgan, Michael O'Neill, Frank P. Weldon,
		  and 0. Reed. By the 193Os the local had affiliated with the Hotel and
		  Restaurant International Union as the Cooks' and Waiters' Union, No. 22.</p>
      <p>
		  In the early 1920s the Cooks' and Waiters' Union joined with the Women's
		  Protective Union, No. 457, and the Bartenders International League of America,
		  Local 55, to form a joint board, with each of the three member unions retaining
		  its respective autonomy. In 1973 the Cooks and Waiters' Union merged with the
		  Women's Protective Union forming the Culinary and Miscellaneous Employees
		  Union, Local 457. In 1982 they were joined by the bartenders and formed the
		  Hotel Employees, Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union, Local
		  457. </p>
