Robert Fernald was a Professor of Zoology at the University of Washington. He was born on August 27, 1914 in Larchland, Illinois. He earned his undergraduate degree from Monmouth College in Illinois and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Washington in 1946, Fernald was an Instructor at Coe College and the University of California. He also served in the Navy during World War II, during which time he studied at the School of Epidemiology and Sanitation at the National Naval Medical School.
In 1956, Fernald was named the Acting Director of the University of Washington's Oceanographic Laboratories in Friday Harbor, which was renamed UW Friday Harbor Laboratories in 1958. He was appointed as the Director in 1959, and held that position until his retirement in 1972. Following his retirement, Fernald was appointed Professor Emeritus of Zoology and remained at Friday Harbor as a research scientist and graduate student mentor. He also served on the Board of Trustees at Western Washington University.
Robert Fernald died on February 5, 1983.
