In 1904, Elizabeth Hungate formed a women's reading circle in Pullman, Washington, with ten members, including Grace Baum, A. B. Baker, C. M. Waters, J. J. Murray, I. Dysart, Mrs. Charles White, Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Keeney, and Mrs. True. The group held meetings every two weeks to discuss the Winona and Chautauqua Reading Courses, as well as Shakespearean readings. Once the Pullman Historical Club was formally organized (later that year), with its first charter membership numbering nineteen women, the group selected yearly subjects for their research and activities, with its first focus on the history of Japan. The club has received recognition from national organizations, including the Pan-American Union, for the comprehensive level of scholarship within their study courses. These histories span the globe and address religion, education, art, music, as well as local history. Supplementing their reading courses and the presentations given by members at regular meetings, the Pullman Historical Club has had guest speakers from the community, and has held themed luncheons, including the President's Day program. In addition to other community services performed by group, the Pullman Historical Club has collaborated with local organizations, such as the Red Cross and the Pullman Fortnightly Club, and worked to secure libraries, water fountains, and playgrounds for Pullman schools. The Pullman Historical Club is currently active.
