American Heritage magazine was founded in late 1949 by the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), which published five volumes of a saddle-stitched magazine. In 1954, AASLH sold the magazine to three former Time, Inc. editors, James Parton, Oliver Jensen and Joseph J. Thorndike, Jr. They envisioned a new kind of magazine: an abundantly illustrated bimonthly, bound in hard covers with no advertising. The first issue of the new series appeared in December 1954, edited by Bruce Catton, who had just won a Pulitzer Prize.

The collection contains founding documents, annual reports, Board of Directors meeting minutes, financial records, memoranda and correspondence, office bulletins, and publicity materials.

Founding documentation includes bylaws, certificates, prospectus and correspondence relating to the founding and financing, 1954.

Business records include annual reports (1959-1968) auditor's reports (1955; 1957; 1958), and other reports and letters to stockholders (1955-1969).

Board of Directors records include meeting minutes and agendas, private minutes by James H. Sachs, and financial records including budgets, financial statements, and salary schedules, 1955-1969.

Memoranda and other communications includes memoranda and letters to Board of Directors (1955-1968), memoranda to staff (1958-1967), office bulletins, no. 2-140 (1958-1970), and general correspondence to James Parton and James H. Sachs, among others, (1955-1968).

Publicity materials include press releases, letters to readers and subscribers, book announcements, catalogues, price lists, and clippings.
