materials and manuscript drafts from a scholar on the life and work of the
photographer Edward CurtisMick Gidley was born March 1, 1941, in England. He received a BA from
the University of Manchester in 1963 and his PhD in Philosophy from the
University of Sussex in 1976. Gidley taught at the University of Exeter
(1971-1978) and served as the Director for the Center for American &
Commonwealth Arts and Studies (1984-1995). He joined the University of Leeds as
a professor of American Literature (1995-2006) and after retirement continued
as Emeritus Professor of American Literature & Culture (2006-2022). Gidley
authored several books and articles about the life and photography of Edward S.
Curtis, including: The Vanishing Race: Selections from Edward S. Curtis's “The
North American Indian,” Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian,
Incorporated, and Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian Project in the
Field.

Separated and cataloged 6 books from the collection. "Wij Zijn Een
Dell Van De Aarde" by Jan van Arkel, "Edward S. Curtis Photographer of the
North American Indian" by Victor Boesen and Florence Curtis Graybill (with
signature), "Wife of Moon" by Margaret Coel, "To Catch the Lightning" by Alan
Cheuse, "Edward S. Curtis Coming to Light" by Anne Makepeace (with signature).
Three thesis were also separated and cataloged from the papers. "Utterly Lost?
L'indien et la photographie a l'epreuve de l'(anti)-modernite dans The North
American Indian d'Edward S. Curtis" by Mathilde Arrive, "Art of Ethnography: A
Critical Analysis of Edward S. Curtis' The North American Indian" by Angela
Laura Brayham, and "Edward S. Curtis, photographe de 'The North American
Indian' et la representation de 'Indien dans le cinema Americain" by Larisa
Dryansky.
Eight exhibit pamphlets were separated and cataloged. Smithsonian
Institution Libraries, Barbican Art Gallery, Hood Museum of Art Dartmouth
College, University of California Irvine, E.B. Crocker Art Gallery, G. Ray
Hawkins Gallery, Grinnell College, and Claremont Graduate University. Removed
and cataloged two DVDs; "In the Land of the Head Hunters" by Edward S. Curtis
and The Indian Picture Opera "A Vanishing Race" by Edward Curtis.
Removed "Verdwijning en verandering" by Herman Cohen Stuart because it
is a duplicate and already held in Special Collections.
Weeded out photocopies of materials held at UWSC and other
repositories that did not contain Gidley notes. Those other repositories
include Burke Museum, Bancroft Library, Southwest Museum in Los Angeles,
Library of Congress, National Archives, Smithsonian, Indiana University,
Seattle Public Library, University of Cambridge, New York Public Library, J.P.
Morgan archive, Prakapas Gallery, American Museum of Natural History, Columbia
University Libraries, Seattle Historical Society, and University of
Arizona.
